Xiaomi releses a new budget phone in low-cost listing with 5020 mAh battery in just days after Xiaomi introduced its premium device Mi 10 Ultra, Xiaomi has shown off a phone at the opposite end of the price series – the Redmi 9, a budget phone that is just launched in the United Kingdom.

IMPORTANT NOTICE -- It is even cheaper if you purchase it before August 23, because the company is offering it at £149 with the Mi Band 4 fitness tracker thrown in too. After that, it'll go back to £159, which remains to be a very affordable price for a smartphone.

The Xiaomi Redmi 9 is now probably the most inexpensive phone the company provides here, as it costs just £159, less than the Redmi Note 9S and some others at £200.

Xiaomi Redmi 9 specs

The Redmi Note 9 has a 6.53-inch display screen with a 2340 x 1080 resolution. Given lots of inexpensive phones have low-res screens, that is impressive for a smartphone at this cost.

When it comes to internals, there is a Mediatek Helio G80 processor joined by 4GB RAM and 64GB storage – not incredible specs, but around what's expected for a sub-£200 phone.

The battery is pretty impressive although at 5,020mAh. It is the most impressive we have seen in a Redmi phone. Saying that, given the middling processor and smaller display in comparison with many different Redmi handsets, the phone could last two whole days of use.

There are 4 rear cameras – a 13MP primary, 8MP ultra-wide, 5MP macro and 2MP depth-sensing snapper, with an 8MP selfie camera on the front. Redmi's Note series have 48MP and 64MP snappers, so the ones listed here are a little low-res, but again it is indicative of the low price.

Quick Features

  • Palm Shutter
  • Depth Sensor
  • Macro Lense
  • Kaleidoscope
  • Eye Protection
  • 1080p
  • AI quad Camera
  • high-capacity battery

Lastly, there is a 3.5mm headphone jack and USB-C port here , the latter might impress some as low-cost phones can usually have a micro USB port which results in slower charging.

We'll run you through the specs above. but it's value pointing out we've not tested this smartphone, so cannot attest to its quality. We have, however, tested other Xiaomi Redmi phones and usually find them reliable gadgets on par with Motorola's G line. When we've reviewed this mobile, it may earn a spot on our listing of the most effective Xiaomi phones or top low-cost phones – but we'll remain to see.
