YouTube is rolling out 4K video quality support for Apple TV 4K devices. Apple mentioned on the website, "Watch the latest YouTube videos in their full 4k glory. Your favorite music, slo-mo, outdoor, and vlog footage never looked better"

YouTube app is rolling out 4K quality support on videos for Apple TV 4K devices.

When Apple TV 4K was first launched 3 years in the past, it supported 4K HDR playing of most providers with the notable exception of YouTube. It can be said that This was due to the truth that YouTube player uses Google's VP9 codec for all videos available above 1080p resolution and the system would require either hardware or software program decoding to play it back. Hardware decoding of VP9 isn't out there on Apple silicon and the YouTube app does not perform software decoding.

YouTube is rolling out 4K video quality support for Apple TV 4K devices, at least according to some folks on Reddit.

From screenshots uploaded by some users, 24/30fps videos seem to be out there in full 4K. However, it appears 60fps videos solely appear to be available up to 1440p. Based on the YouTube stats, all of these videos are playing in Google's VP9 codec.

One massive omission here is HDR. Even when playing some videos that were uploaded in HDR quality, YouTube is still providing the SDR version.

Because of this issue, Apple TV 4K users were left bereft of 4K YouTube for 3 years. That was until previously this year when Apple introduced that 4K YouTube would be coming to the TV 4K in tvOS 14.

As promised, it appears the feature is now rolling out continuously to all Apple TV users.

As talked about earlier, the videos are being played in VP9, which implies it is likely either a YouTube player or tvOS for Apple TV is decoding the codec in software.

That is, in fact, not trivial, particularly at this resolution, which is probably going why only 30fps videos appear to be playing in 4K while 60fps movies appear to be playing up to 1440p resolution. And there's no HDR, which would require extra processing. Let's not neglect, the Apple TV 4K is working on a three-year-old A10X, which relies on a four-year outdated A10.

Since Apple never promised HDR, it is likely that won't be coming to YouTube on Apple TV 4K. Additionally, we can't yet fully be sure if the limitations with resolution and frame rate(fps) are because of the limited processing power or just quirks of the preliminary rollout.

Many customers have not obtained this update yet, which happens on the server-side. They don't have any alternative but to wait till it reveals up for their account.
