No classes due to a ransomware attack. On Wednesday, a Maryland school district stated it was canceling all classes precisely because of a cyber attack.

A ransomware attack strain has taken out the IT systems at Baltimore County Public Schools, which serves around 11,000 students. “Due to issues with our network, all Baltimore County Public Schools and places of work will be closed today,” the district post over Twitter.

The attacks usually process by searching for computer systems across the victim’s network after which encrypts all the data inside. So as a precaution, the local teacher’s affiliation has been telling its educators to shut down/turn off all their computer systems.

The school system has been counting on remote learning to teach students at the house in the course of the pandemic. However, the ransomware cyber attack has shut down the district’s website, along with the email and grading system, according to The Baltimore Sun. “All the things were impacted,” the district’s chief of staff Mychael Dickerson informed the newspaper. “It’s extensive enough that we made this decision. We knew it wouldn’t be a quick solution.”

The objective of the attack is to then force the victim to pay up, in Bitcoin. And in some cases, the ransom demand can reach well into the six figures. Nevertheless, it’s unclear whether Baltimore County Public Schools has acquired a ransom note but, or if it will pay up.

The Baltimore County Authorities additionally commented on the ransomware attack, saying it hasn't been affected. "We do not have any reason to believe that Baltimore County Government systems have been compromised, but the County’s Information Technology group is closely inspecting our network and all devices out of an abundance of caution and has put in place further security measures," the government stated in a statement.
