Apple Begins To Develop Its Own Cellular Network Modem

Recently, Apple’s top chip executive, Johny Srouji, said in a meeting with Apple employees that Apple has started the development of its first own cellular modem in 2020, and the latest chip will be applied to Apple’s future products, to replace Qualcomm’s mobile chips.

Once this news came out, Qualcomm's US stock price dropped as much as 6.3% in extended trading.

Before the release of the iPhone 12 series, because Apple did not meet Qualcomm’s high patent fees, Apple models including the iPhone 11 and iPhone XS series all used Intel’s baseband.

From the actual experience point of view, because of being equipped with Intel baseband, the mobile phone signal was not satisfactory

And due to that, Apple has been ridiculed by the outside world, and this even affected the sales of smartphones to a certain extent.

Although after the settlement between Apple and Qualcomm, this year's iPhone 12 series finally used Qualcomm's baseband, but based on Apple's ambitions, Apple is definitely not willing to be restricted.

According to previous reports, court documents show that Apple will use Qualcomm's 5G baseband before 2023. That is to say, the cooperation between Apple and Qualcomm may only last until 2023.

As early as 2019, Apple acquired Intel's smartphone baseband business, so this also makes people speculate whether Apple will build its own 5G baseband chip.
