Facebook-owned WhatsApp is reportedly working to extend the safety of its cloud backups with a new update - a new password protection characteristic that’ll encrypt chat backups, making them available only to the person.
“To prevent unauthorized entry to your iCloud Drive backup, you can set a secure password that will be used to encrypt your data's future backups,” one of the screenshots reveals(Note:- scroll down).
“This password can be required once you restore from the backup.” The application then asks the person to verify their telephone number, and choose a password that’s a minimum of 8 characters long. One other screenshot warns that “WhatsApp will not be able to help recover forgotten passwords as well.”
Though chats are end-to-end encrypted, which means they’re solely seen to the sender and recipient(completely private), the service warns that this protection doesn’t extend to online backups saved on iCloud and Google Drive.
As soon as on these servers, the security of the chat backups is the responsibility of the cloud service providers, who up to now have made them accessible to law enforcement authorities with valid search warrants.
Encrypting the backups with a strong password solely you recognize would theoretically stop anybody from accessing your chat's history without your permission.
These newest reports in regards to the feature come as WhatsApp’s reputation has taken a hit from a new privacy policy, which has stoked fears that it could store extra data with parent firm Facebook.
Though WhatsApp insists the new policy doesn’t have an effect on the safety of individuals’ personal messages, rival messaging services like Telegram and Signal have seen a surge in interest as users discover other options.
