Maximum age indication has been registered by competent bodies in the US and Europe
Square Enix has made it official that Final Fantasy XVI is the first game in the main franchise to be R-rated. According to US and European age board records, the new RPG is rated M (Mature) and PEGI 18+ respectively in the regions.

So far, there are no details about the reasons for the classification on the official websites, but clarification was provided through a promotional email.

Sent to players who pre-ordered and subscribed to the newsletter, the content reaffirms the positioning for young adults and older.

Apparently, this determination follows information presented in trailers and in previous summaries. That's because Square Enix has confirmed that Final Fantasy XVI will have a darker approach, with explicit graphic violence, delicate themes and a mature plot.

Final Fantasy XVI will be released on June 22, 2023 for PS5.
