Apple recently released the first beta of iOS 16.3 / iPadOS 16.3 to developers. Here are the notable changes and new features on this version.

Support for protecting Apple ID with physical security keys:

Starting in 2023, users can enhance the protection of their Apple ID and iCloud accounts with a Physical Security Key. This means that users will set up a device as the second two-factor authentication layer for their account.

This security key integrates with the device-to-device transfer process. So, after authenticating your iPhone with a Physical Security Key, you won't have to do it again if you buy a new iPhone, as long as you use the setup transfer process between the two devices.

User guide on how to use Handoff from iPhone to HomePod:

In fact, switching from iPhone to HomePod is not a new feature and it has been available since the first generation HomePod (discontinued in 2021). With the HomePod mini, this feature works even better and more accurately thanks to the U1 chip.

All you need to do is bring your iPhone close to the HomePod to stream songs, podcasts, or calls. To help familiarize users with the feature, Apple included in iOS 16.3 a new guide that shows HomePod owners how to do it in great detail.

Other notable changes:

  • Savings account through Apple Card
  • Apple Pay Postpaid
  • Apple Music Classic
  • Custom accessibility mode
  • Advanced data protection for iCloud outside the US

Registered developers can now download iOS 16.3 and iPadOS 16.3 profiles from the Apple Developer Support Center to install the latest beta (Settings => General => Software Updates.)
